Gaillac Grape Varieties

The Gaillac vineyard is one of the oldest in France. Its native grape varieties, cultivated for centuries in the Tarn, give Gaillac wines their unique identity. At Domaine de Labarthe, we have been growing these ancestral varieties using certified organic farming for generations.

Braucol (Fer Servadou)

Braucol, also known as Fer Servadou, is THE flagship grape of Gaillac. Grown exclusively in South-West France, it produces powerful red wines with aromas of dark fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry), violet and spice. Its tannic structure gives it excellent ageing potential.

At Domaine de Labarthe, Braucol is the main grape in our Tradition Red and our Cuvée Guillaume.

Duras

Duras is a red grape endemic to Gaillac, found almost nowhere else in the world. It brings roundness, suppleness and notes of red fruits (raspberry, cherry) to Gaillac blends. Paired with Braucol, it forms the iconic duo of Gaillac red wines.

Find it in our AOC Gaillac red wines.

Mauzac

Mauzac is Gaillac's historic white grape. It is the variety behind the famous Méthode Ancestrale Gaillacoise, the oldest sparkling-wine method in the world (long before Champagne!). As a still wine, it offers aromas of green apple and honey with beautiful natural acidity.

Loin de l'Œil (Len de l'El)

Its Occitan name means "far from the eye" because its clusters grow far from the bud (the "eye" of the vine). This white grape unique to Gaillac produces wines of great finesse, with citrus, peach and white-flower notes. It is used in both dry and sweet wines.

Discover it in our dry white wines and sweet white wines.

Syrah

A supporting grape in our red blends, Syrah brings colour, dark-fruit aromas and characteristic peppery notes. It complements Braucol and Duras harmoniously in some of our cuvées.

Muscadelle

Muscadelle is an aromatic white grape used in our sweet white wines and our organic grape juice. Its musky aromas of orange blossom and fresh grape make it a grape of immediate pleasure.

Prunelart

An extremely rare red grape variety, almost extinct, Prunelart was saved from oblivion by a handful of passionate Gaillac winemakers. It produces wines of remarkable intensity, with notes of prune, liquorice and spice.
