Organic Farming — Our Commitment
At Domaine de Labarthe, organic farming is not a trend — it is a conviction. As winemakers in Gaillac since 1550, we have always worked in harmony with nature. Organic certification simply made official the practices our family had been applying for generations.
Our practices in the vineyard
Growing vines organically means choosing the living world:
- Natural cover crops — Grass between the vine rows promotes biodiversity, limits erosion and feeds the soil with organic matter
- Compost and green manures — We feed our soils with compost made on the estate and with plants sown between the rows (clover, fava bean, mustard)
- Natural treatments only — Copper and sulphur in minimal quantities to protect the vine, no chemical pesticides or herbicides
- Mechanical soil work — Weeding is done by ploughing and hoeing, never by chemicals
- Observation and prevention — We encourage natural predators (ladybirds, bats, birds) to regulate pests
In the cellar: natural winemaking
Our organic approach extends into the cellar. We vinify with minimal interventions to let the terroir express itself fully. Indigenous yeasts, naturally present on the grapes, drive the fermentation. Sulphites are kept to the strict minimum.
The benefits of organic for our wines
A living, healthy soil produces more concentrated, more expressive grapes. Our Gaillac grape varieties — Braucol, Duras, Mauzac, Loin de l'Œil — reveal their full character when grown in a balanced ecosystem. The result: authentic wines that faithfully reflect their terroir.
Our certification
Domaine de Labarthe is certified Organic Farming (Agriculture Biologique) by an independent body. This certification guarantees compliance with a strict set of specifications at every stage, from vineyard to bottle.
